The epistle of James is a practical wisdom book in the NT. It emphasizes maturing in the Christian faith so that one’s life matches up with biblical precepts. Suffering is the context within which faith produces maturity. Suffering is connected to every aspect of the Christian life. The Christian who endures matures. The end result is joy.
We have to persevere through trials by learning to “do” the Word (1:22-25). If we remain steadfast under trial, we receive the crown of life (1: 12). The theme of loving our neighbor is central to many of the exhortations in this book (2:8). Lastly, God gives grace to the humble as we submit to Him and draw near (4:6-10).
